Type 2 Diabetes Breakthrough

  • Type 2 'can be REVERSED in weeks by following THIS diet'
  • DIABETES can be reversed in a matter of weeks by following a strict low calorie diet, new research shows

Scientists say lifestyle driven Type 2 - a condition that almost 12 million Britons are thought to be at risk of developing - is caused by excess fat in the liver and pancreas.

Findings due to be presented today have given fresh hope that the debilitating disease need not to a life sentence.

They reveal that even if sufferers have been blighted for years the condition can be brought under control by sensible eating.

Professor Roy Taylor, from Newcastle University, said: “The good news for people with Type 2 is our work shows that even if you have had the condition for 10 years you are likely to be able to reverse it by moving that all important tiny amount of fat out of the pancreas. At present, this can only be done through substantial weight loss.” Read more: http://www.express.co.uk/life-style/health/853308/diabetes-type-2-uk-breakthrough-can-be-reversed-low-calorie-diet

Gorging on fruit and vegetables is the key to preventing chronic diseases like diabetes and asthma

  • People who eat lots of fruit are less likely to develop any chronic disease
  • High intake of vegetables helps prevent multiple chronic diseases
  • Healthier people eat lots of different grains, not just wheat and rice
  • The world-first research was conducted by the University of Adelaide
People who eat a higher amount of fruit are less likely to develop any chronic disease, new research from the University of Adelaide shows

Eating plenty of fresh fruit, vegetables and whole grains helps prevent people from developing more than one chronic disease, new medical research shows.

The world-first research conducted by the University of Adelaide examined the link between diet and 11 chronic diseases, including anemia, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, diabetes, arthritis, hepatitis, coronary heart disease, asthma, stroke, fracture and cancer.

It found that people who eat a higher amount of fruit are less likely to develop any chronic disease, while a high intake of vegetables helps prevent people with one chronic disease from developing a second. Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-2668720/Study-proves-gorging-fruit-vegetables-key-preventing-chronic-diseases-like-diabetes-asthma.html

It's never too late to slim down and help your heart: Weight loss at any age can give long-term benefits even if it is only temporary

  • The longer any person is overweight, the more likely they will have problems
  • Experts show for the first time that temporary weight loss is worthwhile
  • Study stresses that obese people should start by preventing weight gain
It's never too late to lose weight because doing so improves the health of your heart – no matter how old you are. Researchers found weight loss at any age in adulthood is worthwhile because it gives long-term heart and vascular benefits. In contrast, the longer an individual is overweight, the more likely they are to have cardiovascular problems in later life, including high blood pressure and greater risk of diabetes. Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-2634431/Its-never-late-slim-help-heart-Weight-loss-age-long-term-benefits-temporary.html

Just because it's diet doesn't mean it won't give you diabetes

  • Two or more diet drinks a day led to diabetes in older women, study shows
  • Were 50 per cent more likely to suffer from cardiovascular-related diseases
  • Regular female drinkers also 30 per cent more likely to have heart attacks

Women who drink two diet drinks a day could be 30 per cent more likely to suffer a heart attack or stroke later in life, research has shown. A study of 60,000 women in their 50s and 60s found a strong link between consuming large amounts of apparently healthy soft drinks and heart disease. Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-2592739/Just-diet-doesnt-mean-wont-diabetes-Even-just-two-lower-calorie-soft-drinks-day-cause-problems-women-later-life.html

Pill that can help to reduce the misery of shingles pain by 30%

  • Trials of experimental drug EMA401 found it cut pain levels for half sufferers
  • Pain relief was experienced after just four weeks of taking two pills a day
  • Shingles is caused by reactivation of the virus that causes chickenpox
  • It affects 190,000 Britons each year, most of them aged over 50
A new treatment could bring hope to thousands of shingles sufferers with long-term pain. Trials of the experimental drug EMA401 found it cut pain levels by at least 30 per cent for more than half of sufferers - some of whom had been in agony for years. Pain relief was experienced after just four weeks of taking two pills a day, according to a study published in The Lancet medical journal.

Breakfast sets you up for the day...and your LIFE

  • In 1981, researchers asked teenagers to record their breakfast habits
  • The same participants were asked to undergo a health tests 27 years later
  • Young people who ate poor breakfasts were 68% more likely to suffer from metabolic syndrome as adults
  • Metabolic syndrome is a collective term for diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity
Eating a poor breakfast in your teenage years can inflict long-lasting damage on your health almost three decades later, according to a new report. Swedish researchers found that people who ate poor breakfasts during adolescence displayed more signs of metabolic syndrome 27 years later, compared with those who ate more substantial breakfasts.

Metabolic syndrome is the medical term for a combination of diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity, and it can cause an increased risk of heart disease and stroke.

By studying the same group of participants 27 years apart, researchers in Sweden found that skipping breakfast, or eating poorly in the morning, during adolescence increases the risk of diabetes and obesity, stock image of an obese man is pictured, by up to 68 per cent in adults

End of the diabetes jab? New insulin implant controls blood glucose levels without injections

  • The wristwatch-size device can be surgically implanted into the abdomen
  • It contains a reservoir of insulin held in place by a gel barrier
  • When glucose levels in the body rise, the gel liquefies and releases insulin into the body - just like a normally functioning pancreas would do
  • As it lowers the glucose levels, the gel hardens again preserving the reservoir - the insulin reservoir has to be topped up every two weeks
  • Human trials are set to begin in 2016 and the first implants could take place on the NHS within a decade

Insulin injections for diabetics could soon be a thing of the past thanks to the creation of a revolutionary new implant. The device, which has been created by British scientists, works like an artificial pancreas by releasing insulin into the bloodstream.

It can be implanted into the abdomen from where it releases a precise amount of insulin meaning injections are no longer needed.

A new abdominal implant could spell the end of insulin injections for people with diabetes

Chocolate and red wine can help stave off diabetes

  • High content of flavonoids in foods may regulate blood glucose levels
  • Flavonoids are antioxidants found in berry fruits, red wine and chocolate
  • They can protect against a wide range of health issues including obesity

It sounds like the ingredient list for an indulgent dessert. But red wine, chocolate and strawberries are more than a guilty pleasure. They could all help guard against diabetes. A study found for the first time the high content of flavonoids found in berry fruits may regulate blood glucose levels, and stave off type 2 diabetes.

Flavonoids are antioxidant compounds found in plants, as well as tea, red wine and chocolate, which can protect against a wide range of diseases, including heart disease, hypertension, some cancers and dementia. Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-2542415/Chocolate-red-wine-help-stave-diabetes-High-levels-antioxidants-regulate-blood-glucose-levels.html

Just nuts: Is the new craze for 'activating' your food the seeds of a great idea?

  • Nutrients in seeds and nuts can be enhanced by 'activating' them
  • 'Activating' involves soaking nuts and then drying them again
  • Nuts can help protect against high cholesterol and coronary heart disease

You may have picked up a packet of almonds or sunflower seeds recently and wondered how on earth they could cost more than £5. The answer could be down to  the latest extreme food trend which sounds more than a little odd: activating nuts.

The benefits of eating a handful of nuts every day (without the salt, honey or roasting – sorry!) have been proven. Nutrient-dense, they are rich in protein (ten to 25 per cent) and up to 80 per cent of the  fat they contain is unsaturated. They are also a significant source of fibre, minerals (copper, magnesium and potassium) and vitamins such as folic acid, niacin, Vitamin E and Vitamin B6, and antioxidants.

Exc-seed-ing expectations: Putting nuts and seeds through a process of soaking and drying - known as activating - before eating, the nutrients are enhanced

As such, nuts can help protect against high cholesterol, coronary heart disease and type 2 diabetes, as well as managing weight.

But now some experts are saying that by putting nuts through a process of soaking and drying – known as activating – before eating, the nutrients are enhanced and easier for the body to absorb, although they taste exactly the sameRead more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-2541791/Just-nuts-Is-new-craze-activating-food-seeds-great-idea.html

It's true what they say about an apple a day

The Victorians famously had a talent for capturing, in memorable proverbs, important insights into life’s dilemmas.
There can be few whose actions have not been influenced at one time or another by the maxim that a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush, or that too many cooks spoil the broth. There is no denying that honesty is always the best policy. And, it has recently emerged, an apple a day really does keep the doctor away.
The unique chemical composition of polyphenols, flavonoids and antioxidant vitamins in peel, pulp and core is, says Dr Adam Briggs in the British Medical Journal, as effective as the cholesterol-lowering statins in preventing or delaying circulatory disorders – without their risk of side-effects. Further, a huge study involving nearly 200,000 people has found that those eating at least three servings of apples a week are less likely to develop diabetes and asthma.
