Washing your hands with cool water is just as effective in killing germs as using hot water...

...and antibacterial soap is no better than a normal cleanser, reveals study

  • Water temperature does not affect how much bacteria is washed off hands
  • Antibacterial soap was found to be no more effective than normal soap
  • People preparing food should scrub their hands for at least ten seconds

Scientists have poured cold water on the theory that we need to wash our hands with hot water to kill germs.

A new study has discovered that cool water removes the same amount of harmful bacteria.
Antibacterial soap was no better than normal soap, researchers also found.

But whichever temperature and soap you use, scrub your hands for at least ten seconds is recommended to get rid of harmful food poisoning bacteria, a New Jersey study suggests. Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-4558764/Washing-hands-cool-water-kills-germs-hot.html

Revealed... how watching porn really affects your BRAIN

  • When people view X-rated images it causes a surge in the chemical dopamine
  • Repeated dopamine surges means the brain comes desensitised to it
  • More is needed for the same 'hit' - meaning men are unexcited by ordinary sex
  • Regularly watching pornography also causes the brain to shrink, experts found

Teenagers as young as 13 regularly watch it, and for millions of adults it is their guilty pleasure.

Pornography offers men and women alike a chance to explore their sexual fantasies.

But while X-rated images and films can help boost your libido, and many report it improves relationships, there is another side affecting your health. Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-3196809/It-induces-addiction-makes-men-hopeless-bed-discover-porn-affect-BRAIN.html

Drinking FIVE cups of coffee a day reduces your risk of developing liver cancer by up to 50%

  • Drinking one cup of coffee a day lowers your liver cancer risk by 20%
  • Two coffee cups reduces your risk of developing the disease by 35%
  • Decaffeinated options have a protective effect but to a lesser extent
  • Researchers say more research is needed to determine its health effects
Researchers from Southampton and Edinburgh universities examined data from 26 studies involving more than 2.25 million participants.

Compared with people who drank no coffee, those who drank one cup had a 20 per cent lower risk of developing the most common form of primary liver cancer, known as hepatocellular carcinoma, they found.

Results, published in the journal BMJ Open, also found that those who drank two cups had a 35 per cent reduced risk of suffering the disease, while drinking five cups cut their risk in half. Key gene is identified in hunt for Crohn's cure

Researchers claim new treatment for incurable bowel disease may soon be found

  • The discovery raises the prospect of treatment for incurable bowel disorders
  • The illnesses, which include Crohn's disease, affects 300,000 in the UK alone
  • The study has been hailed as a 'significant step forward'

A key gene that helps to explain an underlying cause of incurable bowel disorders, which affect around 300,000 people in the UK, has been identified by scientists.

A study found that blocking the effects of the beneficial gene can harm vital parts of the cell and lead to bowel disease.

The findings boost understanding of the cause of these lifelong conditions and could lead to new treatments, scientists say. Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-4505418/Key-gene-identified-hunt-Crohn-s-cure.html

Could YOU knock years off your looks by going to the face gym?

Personal trainers share the perfect at-home session for you to try

  • It's Britain's self-proclaimed ‘only face gym,’ found in West London’s Kings Road
  • Workout begins with ‘warm-up’ - a mini Pilates ball pressed to the face
  • Next comes the ‘cardio’ section, then there's ‘strength training’

It's Britain's self-proclaimed ‘only face gym’, promising ‘fast, effective, natural face-lift solutions’ and insisting customers will look younger after just one visit.

As improbable as it may seem, the theory is that by doing FaceGym’s exercises – a sort of face massage that involves having your face forced into all kinds of funny expressions – blood circulation, cell renewal and collagen production is boosted.

This lifts and tightens the muscles in the face. And experts agree that this is not just futile grimacing. Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-4502862/Could-knock-years-looks.html

Breast milk... the ‘accidental’ cure for cancer

Scientists find it contains a substance that kills tumour cells

  • Breast milk contains a substance nicknamed Hamlet that can kill tumour cells
  • The substance in the milk can home in on the bad cells without killing good cells
  • Patients injected with Hamlet could start shedding dead cells within days

Breast milk is being used to fight cancer after scientists accidentally discovered it contains a substance that kills tumour cells.

Trials in patients with bladder cancer have already yielded promising results and researchers believe the compound breast milk contains – nicknamed Hamlet – will also help tackle bowel cancer and cervical cancer.

They also say it homes in on cancer cells while leaving healthy cells unharmed – so it has none of the debilitating side effects of chemotherapy. Read more:http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-4503772/Breast-milk-accidental-cure-cancer.html

Could painful knee replacements be a thing of the past?

Scientists may have uncovered arthritis cure

  • Researchers have found a molecule protects against cartilage deterioration
  • Injecting high levels of the molecule in rats prevented arthritis' development
  • Molecule replacement therapy could take the place of artificial joint procedures
  • Joint replacements have a long healing process and carry risks of complications

Scientists may be one step closer to finding a cure for arthritis, preventing the need for painful joint replacements.

Researchers have discovered a certain molecule maintains cartilage and therefore halts arthritis' onset.

In the future, molecule replacement therapy could take over from artificial joint surgery, which can take up to two years to completely heal and carries blood clot and infection risks.
Study author Dr Bruce Cronstein, New York University, said: 'Because joints may have to be replaced again and again, if we can put off the need for joint replacement until later in life, odds are that patients will only have to have this done once.'

In the US, around 4.7 million people had their knee replaced and 2.5 million had their hip replaced in 2010. In England and Wales, around 160,000 hip and knee replacement surgeries are performed each year.Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-4495326/Could-knee-replacements-soon-thing-past.html

How rubbing your arms can banish bad memories

'Havening' technique helps you get rid of distressing thoughts

  • Research team recruited a group of 27 people with anxiety or depression
  • Havening can reduce symptoms by altering the way memories are stored
  • It involves rubbing your arms and moving your eyes in a series of motions
  • Process works by boosting levels of the mood-stabilising brain chemical serotonin, which disrupts the link between the memory and the distress
If you're feeling anxious or struggling to deal with difficult memories, the simple act of rubbing your arms may help banish the emotional pain, according to a study.

The simple technique, known as Havening, can help reduce anxiety and depression by altering the way memories are stored or recalled.

The process is thought to work by boosting levels of the mood-stabilising brain chemical serotonin, which can disrupt the link between the memory of an event and the distress it causes.
