Could painful knee replacements be a thing of the past?

Scientists may have uncovered arthritis cure

  • Researchers have found a molecule protects against cartilage deterioration
  • Injecting high levels of the molecule in rats prevented arthritis' development
  • Molecule replacement therapy could take the place of artificial joint procedures
  • Joint replacements have a long healing process and carry risks of complications

Scientists may be one step closer to finding a cure for arthritis, preventing the need for painful joint replacements.

Researchers have discovered a certain molecule maintains cartilage and therefore halts arthritis' onset.

In the future, molecule replacement therapy could take over from artificial joint surgery, which can take up to two years to completely heal and carries blood clot and infection risks.
Study author Dr Bruce Cronstein, New York University, said: 'Because joints may have to be replaced again and again, if we can put off the need for joint replacement until later in life, odds are that patients will only have to have this done once.'

In the US, around 4.7 million people had their knee replaced and 2.5 million had their hip replaced in 2010. In England and Wales, around 160,000 hip and knee replacement surgeries are performed each year.Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-4495326/Could-knee-replacements-soon-thing-past.html

Gorging on fruit and vegetables is the key to preventing chronic diseases like diabetes and asthma

  • People who eat lots of fruit are less likely to develop any chronic disease
  • High intake of vegetables helps prevent multiple chronic diseases
  • Healthier people eat lots of different grains, not just wheat and rice
  • The world-first research was conducted by the University of Adelaide
People who eat a higher amount of fruit are less likely to develop any chronic disease, new research from the University of Adelaide shows

Eating plenty of fresh fruit, vegetables and whole grains helps prevent people from developing more than one chronic disease, new medical research shows.

The world-first research conducted by the University of Adelaide examined the link between diet and 11 chronic diseases, including anemia, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, diabetes, arthritis, hepatitis, coronary heart disease, asthma, stroke, fracture and cancer.

It found that people who eat a higher amount of fruit are less likely to develop any chronic disease, while a high intake of vegetables helps prevent people with one chronic disease from developing a second. Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-2668720/Study-proves-gorging-fruit-vegetables-key-preventing-chronic-diseases-like-diabetes-asthma.html

A glass of milk a day 'keeps arthritis at bay' - but only if you are a woman

  • Daily low-fat milk lowers osteoarthritis in women's knees, study found
  • Had little effect on men, cheese worsened symptoms for men and women
  • Yoghurt made little difference in men and women, Boston medics found
A glass of milk a day could help stop women's knees from creaking, claim researchers.
A new US study found women who frequently drink fat-free or low-fat milk may have less osteoarthritis in the knee. But eating cheese increased the problem in women.

Drinking milk made little difference in men, and eating yogurt did not affect progression in men or women. Osteoarthritis (OARead more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-2598423/A-glass-milk-day-keeps-arthritis-bay-woman.html

Clean teeth can hold off arthritis: Scientists discover link between gum disease bacteria and early onset of the condition

  • Link between gum disease bacterium and onset of rheumatoid arthritis
  • Bacterium produces enzyme which reacts with residue of certain proteins
  • Body recognises these proteins as intruders, leading to an immune attack

Brushing your teeth well could help prevent arthritis, scientists claim. Researchers found a link between the bacterium responsible for gum disease and earlier onset of rheumatoid arthritis, as well as faster progression and greater severity of the condition.

The bacterium produces an enzyme which reacts with the residue of certain proteins. The body recognises these proteins as intruders, leading to an immune attack, the researchers from the University of Louisville’s School of Dentistry in Kentucky said.
